In a letter, 1848, to "My dear sir," Ralph Waldo Emerson introduces two friends from America who wish to meet "an Oxford fellow in loco," plans to go to Paris, and comments favorably on his meeting with Tennyson. In a letter, 1852, to W. Follett Synge, Emerson says he has not yet received John Hiram Lathrop's book and expresses high esteem for Lathrop. In a letter, 1861, to Henry Oscar Houghton, Emerson requests he print a thousand copies of "Conduct of Life" for Ticknor and Fields.
